“Who was Andrè Messager?” I often ask. The Rue André Messager whispers tales of a celebrated French composer and conductor. He was not just any musician. André-Charles-Prosper Messager made a lasting impact.

Born in 1853, Messager’s operettas charmed audiences in France and England. His light elegant style became characteristically Parisian. La Béarnaise launched his career in 1885. He later produced 14 operettas between 1890 and 1926. These included Madame Chrysanthème and Monsieur Beaucaire.

Les Deux Pigeons showcased his talent for ballet. Messager directed the Opéra-Comique in Paris from 1898. Later he became artistic director of the Royal Opera Covent Garden. He even served as associate director of the Paris Opéra.

In 1902, Messager conducted the premiere of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande. His influence extended beyond his compositions and conducting. He shaped the course of French and English musical theatre.

At number 2, painter Michel Dureuil was born. The Rue André Messager immortalizes a musical genius. André Messager’s legacy lives on through his timeless compositions.
