Alfred Brinon. The name itself whispers a story. A story etched not just in stone but in the very fabric of Villeurbanne. This unassuming street holds a poignant piece of Lyon’s history. Right here before you stands Rue Alfred Brinon once known as Chemin de la Boulangerie.
Alfred Brinon was more than just a name on a street sign. He was a socialist a World War I veteran and a Resistance fighter. Imagine this man a caporal-fourrier decorated with the Croix de Guerre. He was a municipal councilor for Villeurbanne for years. He even helped establish the Socialist section of Villeurbanne during the war.
But his dedication went beyond politics. Alfred Brinon sheltered Resistance members. He hid communists and Jews in his home. He helped move a clandestine printing press. These acts of bravery were not widely known until after his death. He truly was a hidden hero of the Resistance. He made his home a safe haven for those persecuted during wartime.
His selfless acts were more than heroic. His home at 23 Rue Michel-Servet became a temporary refuge for prominent figures of the Resistance. He harbored an operator for two months even Emmanuel d’Astier de la Vigerie for three weeks.
Beyond his wartime contributions Alfred Brinon was a fervent mutualist and a staunch defender of lay schools. This commitment led him to serve in numerous positions. He was a founding vice-president of the Entente des Œuvres Laïques. He held positions with public housing and social security organizations. His legacy in Villeurbanne is one of community service and steadfast dedication.
After his death in 1962 following a car accident the city honored him. They renamed Chemin de la Boulangerie to Rue Alfred Brinon. A space in Villeurbanne also bears his name. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who tirelessly served his community.
So as you walk down Rue Alfred Brinon remember the quiet strength of Alfred Brinon. Remember his courage. Remember the stories whispered along this very street. His legacy is here. It is a part of Lyon a part of this neighborhood.
