Established in 1924 the Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule has a rich history. It began as the Staatliche Oberschule fur Madchen a school for girls in Leipzig-Connewitz. Initially housed in temporary buildings and rented rooms the school faced early challenges.
A permanent building was constructed in 1930. This was a simple wooden structure. In 1931 it was renamed the Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule. This honored the Germanist and linguist Rudolf Hildebrand. The school expanded becoming a six-year higher girls’ school in 1934. A larger school area with a garden and sports field was also created.
Tragedy struck during World War II. The Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule was completely destroyed by bombing in December 1943. The school community found refuge in Markkleeberg. Classes continued in makeshift locations. This included homes and even Kinderverschickungslager children’s evacuation camps. The resilience of the teachers and students was remarkable.
In 1947 the school reopened in Markkleeberg-Mitte as the Vereinte Grund- und Oberschule fur Knaben und Madchen. It was a combined elementary and secondary school for boys and girls. The original name Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule was restored in 1948. A boarding school was added in 1950 to accommodate students. In 1976 specialized music classes were introduced. These classes focused on choral music.
The school moved again in 1990 to Markkleeberg-West. It became a Gymnasium offering advanced musical linguistic and scientific programs. Expansion was necessary due to growing enrollment. New buildings were constructed. The current location on the eastern shore of Cospudener See was opened in 2004. The boarding school underwent a major renovation in 2007.
The Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule’s choir is renowned nationally and internationally. It consistently receives awards. The school also participates in projects like the AG Spurensuche. This group researches Markkleeberg’s history during the Nazi era. Their work helped to install Stolpersteine stumbling stones remembering victims of the Holocaust.
The Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule boasts numerous awards. These include Sportfreundliche Schule in 2017 and Schule ohne Rassismus Schule mit Courage in 2021. The school also maintains international partnerships.
Today the Rudolf-Hildebrand-Schule stands as a testament to perseverance innovation and a dedication to both academics and the arts. It’s a place where history music and education intertwine. It’s a truly remarkable institution.
