Marvelous Rudersdal Town Hall a testament to Danish modernism. This architectural gem wasn’t always the seat of Rudersdal Kommune.
Before 2007 this building served as Sallerod Town Hall. The year 2007 marked a significant change. Two municipalities Birkerod and Sallerod merged to form Rudersdal Kommune. This stunning town hall designed by the legendary Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen became the new administrative heart. Its construction finished in 1942 it exemplifies their unique style.
Jacobsen and Lassen’s design is truly exceptional. Notice the two offset buildings. The main entrance isn’t centrally located a departure from traditional symmetry. Yet the design remains harmonious. The large glass panels and windows balance each other creating visual equilibrium.
The town hall isn’t just beautiful. It’s functional. An extension added in 1964 seamlessly blends modern office needs with the original structure’s aesthetic. Constructed from concrete then a modern material it’s clad in elegant Porsgrunn marble imported from Norway. The copper roof adds a touch of timeless elegance.
Inside the council chamber is equally impressive. The large oval screen above provides soft indirect lighting. It also enhances the room’s acoustics. The artwork a painting by Knud Agger depicts the beauty of Sallerod’s natural park.
Even the furniture is special. Much of the original furniture designed by Jacobsen himself remains. He designed everything from chairs and lamps to even the ashtrays and writing sets. Sadly the original embroidered curtains and rugs featuring the municipality’s coat of arms are gone. They were sadly worn out by time. A testament to the building’s history the town hall received protected status in 1992. It underwent a careful restoration in 2017-2018. The restoration stayed true to the original plans and materials ensuring its legacy. Rudersdal Town Hall stands as a symbol of the municipality’s rich history and its forward-looking vision. It’s a remarkable building reflecting both past and present. A building to truly admire.
