Rt Orsula Park offers more than just stunning views. It whispers tales of forgotten paths and tragic choices. This spot reveals a unique perspective of Dubrovnik. You can see all the way to Cavtat and Lokrum Island.
Once, the church of St. Ursula stood here. It was built in the 14th century, around 1348. The church owes its existence to the will of Tolija Silvestro, a noble citizen of Dubrovnik. The name honors St. Ursula. She was a Romano-British saint from a medieval legend. According to the legend, Ursula and her 11,000 handmaidens were slaughtered by Huns in Cologne. Ursula became the saint of virgins.
But how did a British princess connect to this Dubrovnik chapel?
The location of St. Ursula Church atop these cliffs is key. It stands on the old trading route to the east. This path is still partially visible today. But Rt Orsula has a darker side.
In the days of the Republic of Dubrovnik, young women met tragic ends here. They threw themselves from these cliffs. Some were said to be pregnant after being mistreated by noblemen. These reports are unconfirmed. Yet, the chapel’s dedication to St. Ursula, the saint of virgins, hints at this sad chapter.
The small chapel has a turbulent history. In 1806, soldiers torched the church. They aimed to halt Napoleon’s advance on Boka Kotorska. The fires leveled the church. The remains lay hidden for two centuries.
Then, Andro Vidak, a local man, rallied volunteers. They worked hard to unearth the church. They brought it back to some of its former glory.
The name Ursula evolved into Orsula over time. Today, you can visit Rt Orsula Park. It offers an amphitheater that seats 350 people. It’s a place to witness unforgettable sunrises and sunsets. The chapel may be incomplete, but the view remains breathtaking. It is as magnificent as it was when it was first built.
The park also hosts the Mali Glazbeni Festival during the summer. Here you can enjoy live music. It is a short walk from Sveti Jakov area of Dubrovnik.
