Imagine standing here at Rt Jezik. The wind whispers tales of old Ragusan sailors. They navigated by these very shores.

Rt Jezik itself might not seem like much at first glance. It is a simple cape. Yet, it has witnessed centuries of Dubrovnik’s rich history.

Dubrovnik, historically known as Ragusa, boasts a captivating story. Its roots trace back to the 7th century. Refugees from Epidaurum, or Ragusa Vecchia, sought shelter here. They named their new home Ragusa.

The name Dubrovnik emerged later. It stems from the Proto-Slavic word “dąb”. This word means oak. “Dubrovnik” then signifies “oak wood” or “oak forest”.

The Dubrovnik subdialect called “dubrovački jezik” adds another layer to this area’s identity. Once considered an independent language, it’s now a subdialect of Serbo-Croatian. It echoes with influences from Venetian and Florentine Italian.

The Dubrovnik Republic flourished on maritime trade. Skilled diplomacy allowed its merchants to travel freely. Their ships, known as argosies, sailed the world. The Republic even abolished the slave trade in 1418. “Libertas” meaning freedom, became their motto. It was proudly displayed on their white flag.

Dubrovnik became a cradle of Croatian literature. The local language found its place in written works. The city balanced its sovereignty between Venice and the Ottoman Empire.

However, disaster struck in 1667. A devastating earthquake claimed over 5,000 lives. It leveled public buildings. The Republic faced decline.

In 1806, Napoleon’s forces occupied Dubrovnik. The Republic was abolished. It was then incorporated into the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy.

After years of French occupation, the people of Dubrovnik revolted. They joined forces with the British. They forced the French surrender. But Austria soon replaced French rule. Despite never signing a capitulation, Dubrovnik lost its independence.

Even today, the old city retains its charm. Its walls, built in the 16th century, stand as a testament to its resilience. The main street, Stradun, bustles with life.

The Rector’s Palace, a masterpiece of Dalmatian architecture, reflects the city’s history. The Sponza Palace houses the State Archives. They preserve manuscripts dating back 800 years.

Rt Jezik witnessed Dubrovnik’s struggles and triumphs. From its founding to its modern-day allure, Dubrovnik continues to captivate. It earns its title as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”.
