Is it possible that the stones of the Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom could tell us a story? The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom stands as a testament to faith in Budapest. This neogothic Roman Catholic church is located in the XIV district. It is on Thököly Road. The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom has a rich history.

Let’s step back in time to the early 20th century. The Dominican Order established a chapel in 1905. It was on Thököly Road. A grander vision soon followed. Construction of the Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom began in 1912. It concluded in 1915. Antal Hofhauser designed the church. The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom was dedicated on October 3 1915. Archbishop János Csernoch of Esztergom officiated. It became the national shrine of the Queen of the Rosary.

The parish was established in 1919. Dominican fathers served here until 1951. Then diocesan priests took over until 1989. The Dominicans returned from 1989 to 2007. Since 2007 the Esztergom-Budapest Archdiocese has overseen the church. It is known as the Rózsafüzér Királynéja Parish.

The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom is an architectural marvel. It has a Latin cross layout. A single nave leads to a semicircular apse. A higher and lower tower flank the structure. The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom can accommodate 4000 people. It is 47 meters long and 30 meters wide. The building reaches 22 meters in height. Its tower rises to 80 meters with the cross.

Inside the Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom the main altar is a sight to behold. István Möller designed it from Carrara marble. The altar depicts the Queen of the Rosary with the Child Jesus. Saint Dominic is on the left receiving the rosary. Saint Catherine of Siena is on the right. Statues of Pope Saint Pius V and Saint Albert the Great are below. Lajos Ligeti created the statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Joseph. They stand on the two small side altars. Gyula Petrovácz designed the altars in the transept. They are dedicated to Saint Margaret of the Árpád House and Saint Dominic. Above them are frescoes by Béla Kontuly. They depict scenes from the lives of the saints.

The stained glass windows are stunning. They were created between 1922 and 1940. Notable artists like Miksa Róth and József Palka contributed. Hajnalka Fuchs Kontuly designed the current windows in the sanctuary. They illustrate the seven sacraments. Scenes from the Old and New Testaments are in the nave. Frescoes depict scenes from the lives of Saint Margaret and Saint Dominic. These scenes are on the windows. Károly Antal created the Pietà beneath the organ loft. I. Krausz sculpted the statue of Saint Anthony of Padua. Near the entrance is a large crucifix. Andreas Crepaz created this “Tyrolean cross”. Tyroleans gifted it in 1930 for the Saint Imre year. Pope John Paul II used this cross for his altar. He celebrated Mass at Heroes’ Square in 1991.

The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom suffered a fire in 1997. The organ and its surroundings were destroyed. The church was deemed unsafe. Renovation began in 2008. The weakened ceiling was reinforced. Electrical wiring was replaced. The walls were repainted. Restoration of the stained glass windows started in 2012. Erzsébet Tóth a glass painter restored the windows. She also created the rose window. It was consecrated in 2014.

The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom stands as a beacon of hope. Its history is filled with faith. Its art inspires awe. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and history. The Rózsafüzér Királynéja-templom is truly special.
