In 1934, a landmark mansion named ‘Roystead’ was chosen as the new site for Camberwell Grammar School. Thanks to the generous patronage of William Angliss, a prominent figure known as the “meat baron,” Roystead became the cornerstone of the school’s expansion. The purchase of this grand estate marked a pivotal moment in the history of Camberwell Grammar School, solidifying its presence in Canterbury. Over the following eight decades, Roystead witnessed remarkable growth and development. The school flourished, adding impressive facilities to its campus. These additions, including the Danks Science Laboratories, Wootton Design Studios, the Performing Arts Centre, and the Mallinson Music School, stand as a testament to the school’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education. Roystead remained at the heart of it all. Each new building seemed to draw inspiration from the grandeur of Roystead. The legacy of William Angliss, the “meat baron” who made it all possible, is honored in the name of the new Middle School building: the William Angliss Building.
