Royse City was settled in 1885. The Missouri Kansas and Texas Railway came through. G. B. Royse plotted the town. He sold the first lots. That’s how Royse City got its name.
Garrett Burgess Griffin Royse was born in Kentucky. People knew him as Byrd Royse. He was born in 1838. Royse served in the Confederate Army. He was proud of his service. He served with the 19th Regiment Missouri Infantry.
Around 1850 Mrs. McCasland and her sons bought land. This land later became Royse City. Royse married McCasland’s granddaughter in 1880. They were married until his death in 1928.
Royse sold the first lot to Alf Reese and his nephew Albert Royse. Royse helped bring the MK&T Railroad line from Greenville to Dallas. Family legend says Royse offered land for a train station. His condition was that they call it Royse City.
Royse City maintained its small country town feel. This was because of its proximity to Garland and Dallas. Interstate 30 was built south of Royse City in the mid-1960s. The city then grew south to meet the interstate.
In 2000 Royse City had a population of 2957. The rapid growth of the Dallas-Fort Worth area impacted Royse City. Its location along Interstate 30 fueled this growth.
Newer subdivisions were built to the north and south. By 2010 the population was 9349. This represents a growth rate of over 216%.
Royse City extends into Collin and Hunt counties. The city has a total area of about 15 square miles. A small portion of that is water.
In 2020 the population was 13508. The racial makeup was diverse. There was a mix of White African American Asian and Hispanic residents.
Royse City serves as a bedroom community. People commute to Dallas and Greenville for work. The local economy includes service businesses restaurants and schools. Buc-ee’s a popular travel center has a store here.
In 2007 Royse City became a Texas Main Street City. The program promotes the downtown area. It fosters a thriving business district. It also preserves historic buildings.
