Once upon a time in Croydon a school emerged. That school was Royal Russell School. Today we are going to explore the grounds of the Royal Russell School together.
Royal Russell School began as the Warehousemen Clerks and Drapers Schools. It was for Orphan and Necessitous Children. Over time the school evolved. It became the Royal Warehousemen Clerks and Drapers Schools. Finally it was named Royal Russell School.
The school’s motto is “Non sibi sed omnibus.” This means “Not for oneself but for all”. This reflects the school’s values. The Royal Russell School strives to instill a sense of community and service in its students.
Royal Russell School has royal connections. Queen Elizabeth II was a patron. She visited the school four times. Her first visit was in 1950 as Princess Elizabeth. In 1963 she opened Cambridge House and the Practical Block. She celebrated the school’s 125th anniversary in 1979. She also joined the sesquicentenary in 2003.
The Royal Russell School moved to its current location in 1924. The site is two miles south-east of Croydon. It occupies over 100 acres of gardens. The estate is lightly wooded. The school is affiliated with the Church of England. However, pupils of all faiths are welcome.
Today Royal Russell School is independent. It is no longer governed by the Warehousemen, Clerks and Drapers livery companies. Now it operates as a charity. It has its own board of governors. The school includes a Junior School and a Senior School. They share the one-hundred acre estate.
The Royal Russell School fosters a friendly atmosphere. All pupils belong to one of nine Houses. Experienced Housemasters or Housemistresses lead each House. They are assisted by a Deputy. There is also a Tutor team. Royal Russell values individuality. They strive to make each child feel like part of the family.
