Established in 1943 Royal Oak Intermediate School stands proudly. It’s one of Auckland’s oldest intermediate schools. The change better reflected its location. The school’s grounds cover over three hectares. It’s conveniently situated near the Royal Oak Shopping Complex. Before becoming a school this land had a fascinating past. From 1912 to 1922 it housed the Boyd Zoo a major local attraction. During World War II the building served as a temporary hospital. Royal Oak Intermediate celebrates its unique history. It embraces its legacy and future ambitions.

Royal Oak Intermediate has four houses. Binsted Grainger Jordan and Buchanan. These names honour the school’s four founders. Henri Binsted was the first principal serving from 1943 to 1947. The school celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1993. Its 75th anniversary was celebrated on April 1 2018. The school day runs from 8:40 am to 3:00 pm. Students are encouraged to arrive by 8:35 am. This allows time for socialising and preparation.
