Karlsruhe began in 1715. Margrave Karl III Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach sought to build his ideal city. He envisioned it with his palace as its heart. From the palace, 32 paths would radiate outward.

The model for Karlsruhe was Versailles. Louis XIV’s palace inspired the fan-shaped city plan. The aim was to illustrate the ruler’s glory. It emphasized the state’s complete power.

Margrave Karl Wilhelm wanted to leave his old residence in Durlach. It had been only provisionally repaired after the Thirty Years’ War. He dreamed of an extensive city. His residential palace would be at the center.

He issued a letter of privileges. This letter granted Karlsruhe’s citizens many concessions. People were enticed to construct Karlsruhe with these privileges. Traders and manufacturers were also to be established.

The letter ensured freedom of religion. It granted land for residential houses free of charge. Residents also received financial relief from taxes for 20 years. The Margrave decreed that court purchases should favor new residents. New residents were freed from serfdom and military service.

Friedrich Weinbrenner gave Karlsruhe its essential character. He erected many buildings in Neoclassical style. These included the town hall and churches. The city suffered severe damage in World War II. Many noteworthy buildings have been restored.
