Have you ever heard of a troubadour who lost his life delivering gifts to a king? It’s a story you’ll find on the very street you stand on, Rue du Prée Catelan. The name is a whisper from the past, a lingering echo of a song that ended too soon. The Prée, a former quarry, was named after Théohile Catelan, a hunting captain for King Louis XIV, as well as a troubadour named Arnault Catelan, who met his end on this very street. The legend goes that Arnault, bearing precious gifts from Beatrice of Savoy for Phillip the Fair, was attacked and killed by soldiers who mistook his treasure chest for loot, only to find it full of perfumes and elixirs. The King then commemorated this troubadour by building a cross on the spot, but this road is one of several that were named after this tragic figure. This street, though silent now, once saw a kaleidoscope of activity, including the vibrant atmosphere of a park. The Prée Catelan used to be a place where people gathered for leisure, to drink fresh milk from the nearby dairy, hear concerts, and enjoy rides on the carousel. This vibrant energy faded as the years marched on, leaving behind a quiet street named for a story of loss and a reminder of an era long gone.
