Is that a flood marker? Right here at Route du Chenal Muzey we see evidence of nature’s power. This route bears witness to the ebb and flow of the Seine. It silently records the river’s heights. Route du Chenal Muzey in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges is more than just a street. It is a point that shows how high the floodwaters can rise.

Let me tell you about this place. The Route du Chenal Muzey is near the Seine. It is part of the Seine moyenne-Yonne-Loing management area. SPC SMYL monitors this location. This group tracks flood events. They record the levels of high water. They also maintain the flood markers.

The flood marker here isn’t new. The data indicates a field survey was done after a flood. DRIEE IDF and the PCH network helped with this task. The SPC Seine moyenne – Yonne – Loing coordinated it. The team uses both internal resources and external networks.

Let’s examine the marker itself. The marker is paint or ink. Sadly, its visibility isn’t great. The marker dates back to June 4, 2016. Its condition is poor now. It is not expected to last long. Despite its fragility it shows the maximum flood level.

Here at Route du Chenal Muzey, the flood type is river overflow. The water flows over the river banks. It spills into the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, the PHEC data is missing. Also, we do not know if the marker was calculated with exact measures.

Now let’s consider the measurements. The SPC Seine moyenne – Yonne – Loing used a combined method for leveling. The reference is at the base of a utility pole. The altitude of the reference is 32.293 meters. This is based on the NGF IGN 1969 system. The water level was 0.500 meters above this reference. Thus the calculated water altitude was 32.793 meters.

That electric pole nearby is the key. A flood marker is painted on it. Technicians verified this location. Opiotte checked the data on October 10, 2017. The pole is at the entrance to the SNCF site. This site is the Villeneuve sorting yard. A lamp post stands near the entrance too.

Here at Route du Chenal Muzey, we reflect on the power of nature. This unassuming place shows us a story. It is a story of floods and their impact. It reminds us of the importance of monitoring our environment. The Route du Chenal Muzey marker stands. It is a silent witness to the river’s story.
