Seeking adventure? Let’s talk about Route de l’Empereur. Route de l’Empereur isn’t actually in Paris. It primarily stretches from Golfe-Juan to Grenoble, a route immortalized by Napoleon Bonaparte’s daring journey in 1815. Napoleon’s exile on Elba had ended. He landed at Golfe-Juan with a small force, determined to reclaim his throne. He chose a treacherous path through the Alps, a route later named Route de l’Empereur, or sometimes just called the Napoleon Road. This route, spanning almost 300 kilometers, wasn’t for the faint of heart. Napoleon covered this distance in just six days, reaching Grenoble and then Paris. His march began on March 1st, landing at Golfe-Juan. By March 7th, he was in Grenoble. He arrived in Paris on March 20th, his journey a testament to his ambition. Route de l’Empereur winds through stunning landscapes, from the Mediterranean coast to the towering Alps. Imagine Napoleon’s army traversing these challenging terrains, each step fueled by their leader’s audacious plan. Along the route are numerous commemorative plaques, marking key points of Napoleon’s passage. One such spot is Castellane, nestled in the Gorges du Verdon. A near-miss with a falling rock during Napoleon’s ascent led him to exclaim, “So Fate wants to miss me here, where it has served me everywhere?”. While this story may be apocryphal, it adds another layer of intrigue to the Route de l’Empereur. The road itself offers a unique driving experience. The ADR ratio (average time between corners) is 15:1, offering thrilling twists and turns combined with long stretches for taking in the panoramic views. Today, Route de l’Empereur is a popular tourist route. People come to retrace Napoleon’s steps, experience the dramatic landscapes, and reflect on this pivotal moment in French history.
