Journeying to the outskirts of Paris, we find ourselves on the Route de Choisy. It’s a fascinating road with a rich history. The Route de Choisy wasn’t always within Paris. Originally, it extended from the city towards the then-separate hamlet of Choisy-le-Roi. This charming village takes its name from a chateau built there by Mademoiselle de Montpensier. She later bequeathed it to the Grand Dauphin, son of King Louis XIV. Choisy-le-Roi flourished under Louis XV. He purchased the chateau in 1739, officially naming the village Choisy-le-Roi. The Route de Choisy became a vital link, connecting the bustling capital with the royal retreat. Over time, as Paris expanded, the Route de Choisy became incorporated into the city. This once rural road transformed into an urban artery. It became home to industries like the Panhard & Levassor automobile plant and the Lombart chocolate factory. The remnants of this industrial past can still be found along the Route de Choisy’s modern counterpart, Avenue de Choisy. For example, the Lycée Gabriel Fauré stands on the former site of the Lombart chocolate factory. Another interesting fact is that part of the Avenue de Choisy traces the path of an old Roman road from Lutèce (Roman Paris) to Lyon. In the 20th century, the area around the Route de Choisy underwent significant changes. The Italie XIII project, a large-scale urban renewal initiative, led to the construction of modern high-rises. Interestingly, Southeast Asian refugees, arriving after the Vietnam War, populated these initially empty towers, contributing to the vibrant cultural mix we see today. Today, while the name Route de Choisy might not be as prominent, its legacy lives on. Its spirit is embodied in the Avenue de Choisy, a vibrant street alive with the energy of its diverse community. It stands as a testament to the ever-evolving story of Paris.
