Once upon a time this forest became a refuge. Here in the Rottlichwald nature’s embrace tells tales of preservation and tranquility. The Rottlichwald is a mixed deciduous forest located between Karlsruhe and Rastatt. It spans approximately 80 hectares.
In 1939 a significant event occurred. The Badisches Ministerium für Kultus und Unterricht declared the Rottlichwald a Naturschutzgebiet. This designation marked the beginning of formal protection for this precious area. Today the Rottlichwald holds the Schutzgebiets-Nummer 2.029. Its protected area covers 13.0 hectares.
The Rottlichwald’s location is quite interesting. It lies between the Durmersheim district of Würmersheim and the municipality of Au am Rhein. The forest sits at an elevation of about 110 meters above sea level. To the north the Gießengraben defines the boundary. In Au am Rhein this is also known as the Rottlichgraben. The Tieflachgraben forms the western border of the Rottlichwald.
Not all of the Rottlichwald is part of the Naturschutzgebiet. An additional forest area exists between the Gießengraben and a Würmersheim industrial park. This section is bordered to the south by the Kreisstraße 3721. This area makes up about a quarter to a third of the entire Rottlichwald.
The Rottlichwald connects with other nature reserves. To the east the Rheinniederung nature reserve borders the Rottlichwald. This larger area spans 261.6 hectares and lies between Au am Rhein, Durmersheim, and Rheinstetten. Parts of it also fall within the district of Karlsruhe. To the west the NSG Tieflach und Eichenlach adjoins the Rottlichwald. This smaller reserve covers 8.7 hectares.
Water is essential to the Rottlichwald. At the northwestern edge of the forest the Auer Wasserwerk extracts drinking water from groundwater. Because of this some parts of the Rottlichwald are also designated as a Wasserschutzgebiet. This ensures the protection of the water resources.
Imagine walking through the Rottlichwald. Sunlight filters through the leaves creating dappled patterns on the forest floor. The air is fresh and clean carrying the scent of damp earth and green foliage. Birdsong fills the air creating a peaceful symphony.
