This majestic structure before you is the Rotonde Pautrier. It stands as a silent testament to Marseille’s rich railway history. The Rotonde Pautrier isn’t just a building. It’s a survivor.

Built between 1887 and 1889 by the PLM company this impressive roundhouse is one of the last complete ones from that era still standing in France. Imagine the steam locomotives that once filled its 36 radiating tracks. A true marvel of 19th-century industrial architecture it’s a testament to the ingenuity of the time. Its cast-iron columns provided by the Chazelle foundries in Besseges are a stunning detail. They are similar to those found in roundhouses of Nimes and Avignon.

The Rotonde Pautrier originally boasted a central dome a feature sadly lost in 1922 or 1923. Metal canopies were added around the interior to replace the dome’s function. The roundhouse’s eventful life included damage during World War II. Then came its conversion to handle diesel engines in 1951. Finally electrification in 1962 transformed its role.

The Rotonde Pautrier continued operating until 2008. Then a demolition permit was filed by the SNCF. Marseille however stepped in to save this architectural treasure. The city recognized its importance as a symbol of the city’s industrial past. Its preservation is crucial to the preservation of railway architectural heritage. The Rotonde Pautrier was saved.

The Rotonde Pautrier is more than just a preserved structure. It’s been carefully renovated between 2016 and 2020. This renovation transformed the site into a state-of-the-art maintenance and storage facility for TER trains. A vital part of Marseille’s railway network upgrade it stands today as a symbol of both industrial heritage and modern progress. The Rotonde Pautrier is a living piece of history. A reminder of Marseille’s enduring spirit. It continues to serve the city while proudly showing its past. Take a moment to appreciate this landmark. Let its story resonate.
