The Rothschild Mausoleum, within the sprawling West Ham Jewish Cemetery, is not just a tomb. It’s a testament to the heartbreaking tale of Ferdinand and Evelina de Rothschild. Evelina, daughter of Lionel Rothschild, married her cousin Ferdinand in a grand ceremony in 1865. Their happiness, however, was tragically brief. Evelina died in 1866, while giving birth to their stillborn child. The grief-stricken Ferdinand poured his sorrow into creating this grand mausoleum. He commissioned the famed architect Matthew Digby Wyatt to design a fitting tribute to his beloved Evelina. Constructed from marble in a Renaissance Revival style, the mausoleum is a masterpiece of Victorian design. Ferdinand himself rests beside Evelina, united in death as they were in life. The Rothschild Mausoleum reminds us that even amidst the grandeur and wealth, love and loss touch us all.
