Ever heard of a glass wizard? The Róth Miksa Emlékház és Gyűjtemény stands before us. It’s not just a museum. It is a portal into the life of Miksa Róth. He was Hungary’s greatest stained glass artist.
Miksa Róth lived and worked here from 1911 to 1944. His artistry graced buildings across Europe. He even won awards at international exhibitions. Imagine the vibrant colors he brought to life.
This building has a fascinating history. Originally, it belonged to a furniture maker named Gelb Sámuel. In 1911, Róth bought it. He hired architect Pecz Samu to remodel it. A three-story workshop rose in the inner courtyard. This became Róth’s creative hub.
War took its toll. The building served as a German and then a Soviet cartography office. Later, it housed the Honvéd Petőfi Academy. Political officers trained here. The building deteriorated. It became a workshop and then housing.
After nationalization, Róth’s widow and children were left with only three rooms. But the family never forgot Miksa’s legacy. After the regime change, they donated his works to Erzsébetváros. Their goal was to create the Róth Miksa Emlékház.
In November 1999, the dream came true. The museum opened its doors. Today, we can explore Róth’s apartment and admire his masterpieces. Two permanent exhibitions await us on the first floor.
Here, stained glass and mosaic creations showcase the family’s treasures. The attic holds offices and restoration workshops. In 2005, the “Róth Salon” opened on the ground floor. It was once Róth’s studio.
In the courtyard building, you can find even more artistic wonders. Since 2015, an exhibition features works by Róth’s students. He left an indelible mark on his followers.
Róth’s influence extended far beyond Hungary. His works adorn buildings in Mexico, the Netherlands and Norway. He earned gold and silver medals at World’s Fairs. His talent knew no bounds.
Born into a family of glassworkers, Róth continued the tradition. He studied with masters across Europe. By 20, he was an independent artist. Emperor and King recognized him as a Royal Court artist.
The Róth Miksa Emlékház is more than a museum. It is a celebration of community, heritage and culture. It connects the past and present. It embodies Róth’s vibrant personality.
