Named after Antonio Rosmini, founder of the Institute of Charity, Rosmini College stands as a beacon of education in Takapuna. Founded in 1962 by Father Phillip Catcheside, the school began with a vision to instill Christian values. Rosmini College’s motto, “Legis Charitas Plenitudo,” translates to “Charity Fulfills the Law.”

Initially, the school aimed to mirror state schools academically. However, it uniquely integrates religious education, prayers, retreats, and masses into its curriculum. These activities promote the school’s Catholic character. Rosmini College gives enrolment preference to boys from Catholic primary schools.

Did you know that in 1969, several Rosmini College staff members departed to establish St Peter’s College in Gore? Fathers S Marriott and B Hogan and Brothers J Tedesco and E Willett were instrumental in this new venture. Tom Gerrard served as the school’s principal for an impressive 38 years, from 1976 to 2014. His dedication made him New Zealand’s longest-serving principal. The Tom Gerrard Gymnasium stands as a tribute to his lasting impact, opened in July 2009 by Bishop Pat Dunn.

Rosmini College boasts modern facilities. They include the Tindall Auditorium, a school chapel, a music block, the Maire Technology Block, and the Sormany Science Centre. Also, there are two gymnasiums and extensive sports fields.

Academically, Rosmini College shines. In 2017, it achieved the highest NCEA pass rate at level 3 on Auckland’s North Shore, with 96 percent. Sport is vital here. Rosmini College’s senior basketball team secured national titles in 2011, 2017, and 2018. In 1980, the college’s senior football team won the National Secondary Schools Football Championship.

The college also excels in music and performing arts. It provides purpose-built facilities. Rosmini has a jazz band, a choir, solo performers, and rock bands. Drama productions are often collaborations with Carmel College.

Several notable alumni have walked these halls. They include All Blacks Liam Barry, Anthony Boric, Graham Dowd, Blair Larsen, and Rudi Wulf. Also, Gareth Anscombe, a former Chiefs rugby representative; Adrian Blincoe, a middle-distance runner; and Chris Drum, a former Black Cap. Additionally, Moses Mackay, a member of Sol3 Mio; Mark Mitchell, a Member of Parliament; and Martin Snedden, a former Black Cap and sports administrator, all attended Rosmini College.

Today, Rosmini College continues to uphold its traditions. Principal Nixon Cooper leads the school. With a roll of over 1100 students and a dedicated staff, Rosmini College remains committed to developing well-rounded individuals. The college prepares students for the opportunities and responsibilities of adult life. Rosmini College is more than just a school. It is a community. It fosters spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development.
