“Opened in 1970 Rosehill College stands as a testament to Papakura’s growth. It began with just 180 students and 9 teachers. Today Rosehill College is the largest secondary school in the area. Rosehill College’s story mirrors the tale of Auckland’s urban expansion.
Rosehill College’s location is quite strategic. Situated about 31 km south of Auckland CBD it sits on the edge of the metropolitan area. The college welcomes students from western Papakura. It also serves those from Rosehill, Pahurehure and Opaheke. Even students from rural areas like Te Hihi and Karaka attend.
Rosehill College has a connection to the land. The College sits within the Ngāti Tamaoho rohe. This area extends from north of the Tamaki Isthmus to south of the Waikato River.
The grounds of Rosehill College reflect its growth and evolution. There are classroom blocks a hall and offices. You will also find a staffroom. X Block backs onto the sports field. Rosehill also boasts a library an astroturf and a heated swimming pool.
Look around and observe the architecture. Rosehill College features the Nelson Two-Storey design common in 1960s and 70s schools. C Block and S Block exemplify this style. B Block originally a Nelson Two-Storey was damaged by fire. It was rebuilt into a modern technology and science block.
Since 1970 Rosehill College has been guided by six principals. Eric Jerkovich the foundation principal served until 1984. Tom Robson succeeded him followed by Bali Haque. Graeme Macann then Sue Blakely led Rosehill College. Currently Davida Suasua holds the position.
Eric Jerkovich received an MBE for his services to education. Tom Robson and Bali Haque both served as presidents of the Secondary Principals’ Association.
Rosehill College fosters a sense of community through its house system. Atawhai Kahurangi Manutaki Pounamu Rangatahi and Taikura compete. These houses promote camaraderie and school spirit.
Several notable individuals have passed through Rosehill College’s halls. Keisha Castle-Hughes the acclaimed actor is an alumna. Rugby stars Baden Kerr and Kieran Read also attended Rosehill College.
