Question: Ever wondered about a pub named after a princess? Let’s explore the story of the Rose of Denmark.

The Rose of Denmark. It’s a name that evokes images of royalty and perhaps a touch of old-world charm. But this isn’t just one pub; it’s a name shared by several pubs across London, each with its own story.

One Rose of Denmark stood at 78 Shirley Street. It was in North Woolwich. This Watneys pub dated back to 1867. Imagine the dockworkers streaming in at 6 a.m., seeking respite before their long day. Sadly, this Rose of Denmark closed in 1993. It fell into disrepair and was eventually demolished in the late 2000s. Some say local vandals hurried the process along.

Another Rose of Denmark existed at 612 Roman Road. It was in Bromley-by-Bow. This one closed in 2006. It’s now a fast-food takeaway. Once again, this was a Watneys Brewery pub. It was sold to Belhaven around 1990. Like many others, it didn’t last long under new ownership.

The name “Rose of Denmark” has a special connection. It refers to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. She married Prince Edward in 1863. He later became Edward VII. This royal connection gave these pubs a touch of elegance.

There is also the Rose of Denmark at 296 Woolwich Road in Charlton. This one is open as of 2025.

The Rose of Denmark pubs weren’t just about beer and spirits. They were community hubs. Locals shared stories and built friendships. Some even entertained customers.

Though some Rose of Denmark pubs are gone, their stories linger. They remind us of London’s rich history. They remind us of royal connections and community spirit. So next time you raise a glass, remember the Rose of Denmark. Remember its legacy.
