Washed ashore on the sands of time, the Roque del Moro stands sentinel at Cofete Beach. It marks the end of this wild, impressive stretch of Fuerteventura’s coastline. Roque del Moro isn’t mentioned in many Fuerteventura travel guides. Yet, it offers a unique experience. It’s a journey back millions of years, a glimpse into Fuerteventura’s geological past. Roque del Moro is located on the northern coast of the Jandia Peninsula. It’s a rock formation, surrounded by massive cliffs that meet the powerful ocean waves. Visiting during low tide is essential. The high tide can trap water between the rocks, making access difficult. The waves at Cofete Beach are strong. Swimming here is not recommended. The journey to Roque del Moro can be an adventure itself. Google Maps doesn’t show a direct path. Maps.me is a more reliable guide. If you’re driving from Cofete Beach, look for a sign and a small parking area. A rough road leads down to the beach, suitable only for off-road vehicles. Even with an off-roader, walking the 3 kilometers from the Cofete road is recommended. The walk offers stunning views and a sense of Fuerteventura’s ancient history. Fuerteventura is the oldest Canary Island, formed over 20 million years. The island’s unique geology is on full display on the path to Roque del Moro. The path leads through a small canyon. You can see the ocean floor from millions of years ago, with distinct layers marking the water’s past levels. The marine sediments date back to the Mesozoic era, between 252 and 66 million years ago. The unique rock formations, shaped by erosion, showcase different patterns. After reaching the beach, turning left towards Roque del Moro reveals even more wonders. Wind and water have carved the sandstone into beautiful shapes. These formations are a surprise find on Fuerteventura. Finally, you arrive at Roque del Moro. This great rock formation rises against the backdrop of cliffs and crashing waves. As the tide turns, a mystical mist often descends. The mist, combined with the untouched sands and imposing cliffs, creates a surreal atmosphere. The waves wash away footprints, leaving a pristine scene perfect for photography. Roque del Moro is a hidden gem, a place of natural beauty and geological wonder. It’s a must-see on any visit to Cofete Beach.
