Journey with me to the Rond-Point Gaia. This isn’t just any street. It’s a relatively new addition to Marseille.
The Rond-Point Gaia offers more than just a route from point A to point B. It provides coordinates for exploration. Latitude 43.2964996 and longitude 5.4761373 mark its place on the map.
But why “Gaia”? The name connects us to a breathtaking art installation by Luke Jerram. Jerram is a British artist. He brought his touring artwork to Marseille. The artwork is also called Gaia. Gaia is the Greek goddess of Earth.
Imagine a massive Earth floating before you. This is what Gaia offered. It measured seven meters in diameter. NASA’s high-definition images created its detailed surface. Each centimeter represented 21 kilometers of our world.
The Gaia installation landed in Marseille in September 2023. It was housed in the Grande Halle de la Cité des arts de la rue. This is in the 15th arrondissement. It was free for the public to visit until October 7, 2023.
Jerram’s goal was to highlight our planet’s fragility. He wanted to provoke questions about our role in its preservation. He hoped to change our behavior regarding climate change.
Gaia aimed to create the Overview Effect. Frank White coined this term in 1987. Astronauts experience this during spaceflight. They gain a profound sense of interconnectedness. They also get a renewed responsibility for environmental respect.
The installation featured a surround sound composition. Dan Jones, a BAFTA award-winning composer, created it. This enhanced the immersive experience.
Before Marseille, Gaia traveled the globe. It appeared in Hong Kong, England and Sweden. It also was in Spain, Qatar and South Korea. Gaia has been acquired by museums. These include the Science Museum in Boston and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.
The association Les Petits Débrouillards and the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle de Marseille contributed to the Gaia project. They offered workshops. These engaged associations, schools and social centers.
So, as you stand here at Rond-Point Gaia remember the message. Our planet is fragile. We must protect it.
