In the heart of Zugló, on Rína utca, stands a seemingly unassuming single-story summer villa. The Rína u. 117. Plaque commemorates this charming building. The plaque tells us it was built in the early 1890s. Rína utca itself has a fascinating history. Originally named in 1879, it stretched from Nagy Lajos király útja to Egressy út. Later, it was extended to Kerepesi út. From 1961 to 1990, Rína utca was known as Lumumba utca, named after the Congolese politician Patrice Lumumba. But back to our villa at number 117. This house represents the typical architecture of the era and the district. It was built by master builder Ferenc Müller. The plaque further reveals that between 1961 and 1990, this address was actually Lumumba utca 117, reflecting the temporary name change of the street. The area surrounding Rína utca is rich with history too. Nearby, the Kerepesi úti lakótelep, a large housing estate, was built between 1954 and 1961, providing 1600 homes. Just down the road is the Postás Sporttelep, opened in 1959, a testament to the sporting history of the postal workers’ association, established way back in 1899. Rína utca has truly witnessed the changing tides of Budapest’s history.
