Built in 1965 Romford United Reformed Church stands proudly in Western Road. It wasn’t always there. Its story begins much earlier. The original Romford church stood far from the town center. Its location became inconvenient. A new church St Edward’s was authorized in 1406. It stood near the bustling Romford Market.

The Romford United Reformed Church’s history is intertwined with the Congregationalists. This group originally had a burial ground near Roneo Corner. In 1877 they built a new church in South Street. This church even boasted a family clubhouse with a smoking room. However in 1965 this building was deemed too costly to modernize. It was sold. The proceeds helped to found the Samaritans telephone helpline. A new church was built. This new church was the Romford United Reformed Church we see today.

The Romford United Reformed Church’s building is mainly brick. It’s built around steel girders. The design is quite impressive. It features a large worship area and a suite of halls and rooms. The main entrance is not obvious. It is located around the side and back. The double doors at the front might give the impression that the church is closed. But this is deceptive.

The interior of Romford United Reformed Church is plain but functional. Sight lines are excellent. You can easily see the platform from any seat. A large screen hangs behind the platform. It is silver and grey. Cloth banners adorn some of the walls.

The church has always been a place of welcome. A Mystery Worshipper recounted a visit. Five people greeted him warmly. They seemed genuinely pleased to see him. This is typical of the Romford United Reformed Church. This church truly embraces its community. Its commitment to inclusivity is remarkable. This is exemplified by the congregation’s diversity. People of all ages and abilities worship together. An 87-year-old man stood for all the hymns despite his frailty. This devotion is inspiring. This is one of the most welcoming churches the Mystery Worshipper ever visited.
