Behold the Romanushaus a testament to Leipzig’s Baroque past. This magnificent city palace stands proudly on the corner of Brühl and Katharinenstrasse. Its very stones whisper tales of ambition intrigue and a legacy etched in both grandeur and scandal.

Built between 1701 and 1704 the Romanushaus was the dream of Franz Conrad Romanus Leipzig’s mayor. He envisioned a lavish residence a symbol of his power and influence. He commissioned Johann Gregor Fuchs a master mason to create this Baroque masterpiece. The cost 150000 thalers a staggering sum for its time.

But Romanus’ ambition proved to be his downfall. To finance his opulent project he resorted to issuing fraudulent promissory notes. His deception was uncovered. He was imprisoned in Königstein Fortress spending 41 years behind bars. His grand palace a constant reminder of his rise and fall.

Despite his imprisonment the Romanushaus continued to make its mark. Romanus’ daughter Christiana Mariana von Ziegler established a renowned literary and music salon within its walls. The salon attracted prominent figures including the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The house then passed through various hands including wine merchant George Wilhelm Richter who opened a cafe within its elegant walls. Later renovations saw the unfortunate loss of original stucco ceilings and courtyard wings. These were painstakingly restored in the 1990s.

Today the Romanushaus stands as a striking example of Baroque architecture. Notice the ornate garlands the richly decorated gables and the central risalit. A recently placed statue of Hermes adds a further touch of classical elegance. The house now serves as a commercial building but it retains its historical charm its walls echoing the voices of centuries past. Its very existence is a reminder that even the most ambitious endeavors can leave behind a profound and lasting legacy. A legacy you are experiencing firsthand today. A legacy of the Romanushaus.
