How does a city rise from ashes? You might think it’s an impossible question but standing here, before the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hiroshima, we see the answer. Established in 1923, this diocese has seen more than its share of hardship. It originally served as the Apostolic Vicariate of Hiroshima, a smaller administrative region within the Catholic Church. It was here, in this very city, that the unimaginable happened in 1945. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima left an indelible scar, not just on the land but on the hearts of its people. Yet, through this immense tragedy, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hiroshima persevered. It continued its mission, offering solace and spiritual guidance to a community grappling with loss. The Diocese wasn’t just a place of worship, it was a beacon of hope. In 1959, as Hiroshima rebuilt, the Vicariate was elevated to the status of a diocese. This reflected the growing Catholic population and underscored the Church’s commitment to the city’s spiritual revival.
