Timeless St Lawrence Jewry next Guildhall stands tall. Its stone whispers tales of centuries past. This is no ordinary church. It’s a living testament to London’s resilience.

St Lawrence Jewry next Guildhall boasts a history stretching nearly a thousand years. Its current form a masterpiece by Sir Christopher Wren. He rebuilt it after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Wren’s genius is evident in the church’s Baroque style. Its grand east front with Corinthian columns is a sight to behold.

Few know that the unusual alignment of the church might be due to its location. It sits atop the remains of a Roman amphitheatre. Archaeological discoveries in 1988 confirmed this fascinating fact. You can even visit the amphitheatre’s ruins beneath the nearby Guildhall Art Gallery.

The church wasn’t always the magnificent structure we see today. The original building dated back to the twelfth century. It survived for centuries witnessing significant historical events. Sir Thomas More a prominent figure in English history preached within its walls. In 1618 extensive repairs took place. All windows received stained glass thanks to the generosity of numerous donors.

Tragedy struck in 1666. The Great Fire of London destroyed the medieval church. Wren’s design was ambitious. It included a north aisle separated from the nave by elegant Corinthian columns. The ceiling’s sunken panels adorned with wreaths and branches are a testament to Wren’s attention to detail. The church is 81 feet long and 68 feet wide.

Another chapter of resilience followed. World War II’s Blitz caused substantial damage in 1940. The City of London Corporation stepped in to restore the church. Architect Cecil Brown painstakingly followed Wren’s original design. The restoration was completed in 1957.

Today St Lawrence Jewry next Guildhall serves as a guild church. It stands as a symbol of enduring faith and community in the heart of London. It does not have a parish. It is not bound by traditional parish requirements. This unique status makes it even more exceptional. It is a Grade I listed building.
