Lost in the myriad of Budapest’s captivating sights Rőmai-part offers a unique escape. This ten-kilometer stretch along the Danube’s right bank is a hidden gem. It’s a world away from the bustling city center. Imagine a tranquil riverside haven. Here the air is filled with the scents of fried fish and lángos. It feels like a lakeside town rather than a part of a major city.

Rőmai-part’s history stretches back centuries. It was once a popular spot for water activities. In the 19th century numerous boathouses lined the shore. These served as social hubs and places to rent boats. The Danube’s currents are unpredictable though. This caused some damage. Several boathouses were destroyed by floods or simply fell into disrepair.

In the 19th century rowing was a popular sport here. The first Hungarian rowing competition was held in 1842. It was won by Ádám Clark the builder of the Chain Bridge. The area was also home to several restaurants and open-air bathing areas. These contributed to its vibrant social scene.

The 20th century saw further development. Rőmai-part became a watersports paradise. Dozens of boathouses and clubs sprang up. However popularity waned toward the end of the 1970s. This was in part due to concerns about water quality. Designated bathing areas were closed in 1973.

After the fall of communism many of the boathouses were privatized. Many were demolished. Others were converted into residential complexes. The city designated Rőmai-part for development in 1998.

Flooding has also been a major issue. Several significant floods have occurred over the years. Some caused extensive damage. Others required evacuations. The most significant flood was in 2002. It was the worst in 50 years. This led to proposals for a flood barrier. Many are against this. They fear it will destroy the area’s charm. It could also destroy 1400 trees.

Today Rőmai-part offers a mix of old and new. Some of the original boathouses remain. Others have been replaced with modern restaurants and bars. It remains a popular place for cyclists runners and dog walkers. There’s also a seasonal lido. It offers water slides and sunbathing areas.

Rőmai-part is more than just a recreational area. It’s a place with a rich history. It is a testament to Budapest’s resilient spirit. It reflects its adaptation to changing times. Visit Rőmai-part to experience this unique and enchanting place.
