Hurtling through time, the Hullámvasút roller coaster in Budapest’s City Park has witnessed over a century of laughter and screams. The Budapest Amusement Park, or Vidámpark, where it stands, has a history stretching back to the 1800s. This wooden behemoth, built in 1922, isn’t just a ride. It’s a designated historical monument, a testament to the enduring appeal of simple thrills. The Vidámpark evolved from the merger of two amusement areas. One was the Vurstli, a free, open area where performers showcased their talents since 1838. The other was the Angol Park, a more formal, enclosed area with paid admission. The Hullámvasút, with its 971 meters of wooden track, became a beloved attraction within the newly formed Vidámpark in 1950. The park spanned 6.5 hectares, housing 40 diverse rides. Five of these, including the Hullámvasút, hold the distinction of being historical monuments. While the park boasted modern additions like the Looping Star roller coaster, the Hullámvasút held its own. It offered a nostalgic experience, a trip back to simpler times. Sadly, the Vidámpark closed its gates in 2013. The land was absorbed by the neighboring Budapest Zoo. However, the Hullámvasút, a symbol of the park’s rich history, remains. It stands alongside other preserved attractions, like the fairytale boat and the horse carousel. These relics remind us of the park’s vibrant past, a time filled with spinning rides, flashing lights, and echoing laughter. They await their revival within the planned Pannon Park, a project aimed at recreating the spirit of the old amusement park while incorporating new, exciting elements. The Hullámvasút’s story is a story of resilience. It’s a story of adaptation and survival in the face of changing times. It’s a story that intertwines with the history of Budapest, a city known for embracing both its past and its future.
