Slipping through time, let’s explore the Roka-hegyi-barlang. This cave, tucked within the Roka Hill, whispers tales of Budapest’s hidden wonders. Roka-hegyi-barlang isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a portal to a subterranean world shaped by thermal waters and time. The Roka-hegyi-barlang, also known as the Roka-hegyi Poros-barlang (Dusty Cave), stretches 32 meters long and delves 15 meters deep. Imagine water, heated deep within the earth, rising and carving its way through Triassic limestone and Eocene gravel. This process, known as hypogenic cave formation, created the multi-level Roka-hegyi-barlang. As you stand before its entrance, picture the cave’s interior adorned with spherical domes and globe-like formations. Various flowstones, calcite, gypsum, barite, and limonite streaks paint the walls, adding to the cave’s unique beauty. The name “Poros-barlang,” meaning “Dusty Cave,” comes from the thick layer of dust covering the cave floor. Interestingly, the Roka-hegyi-barlang may be connected to another cave, the Roka-hegyi Pillér-barlang (Pillar Cave), adding another layer of mystery to this subterranean realm. Roka-hegyi-barlang first came to light due to quarrying activities in the area. In 1982, members of the Metro Caving Group surveyed and mapped the cave. Later, in 1989, another survey was conducted, providing us with a detailed cross-section. Although easily accessible from the quarry, exploration of the Roka-hegyi-barlang requires basic caving equipment. It’s a journey into Budapest’s hidden heart, a place where the earth whispers secrets of time and water. So next time you’re in Budapest, venture beyond the city’s bustling streets and discover the wonders hidden beneath the surface at Roka-hegyi-barlang.
