Did the stones of Rødøvre Kirke whisper secrets of centuries past? Rødøvre Kirke stands as a testament to time. A beacon in the heart of Rødøvre Kommune. This isn’t just any church. It’s the oldest building in the entire municipality, dating back to 1664. Imagine, Rødøvre Kirke has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in this community for over 350 years. King Frederik III and his architect, Albertus Mathiesen, commissioned this house of worship. A phoenix rising from the ashes of its predecessor, a medieval church tragically destroyed during the Dano-Swedish War. Mathiesen didn’t start from scratch. He ingeniously incorporated the foundation stones of the old church. Look closely at the base of Rødøvre Kirke. You might spot the ancient fieldstones whispering tales of the 13th century. The church’s current form embodies the post-Reformation era. Though much of the structure reflects the 17th century, time has left its mark. A Renaissance altarpiece from 1594 graces the interior. A beautiful contrast against the newer elements, like the 1930s baptismal font and the mid-20th-century pulpit and organ. Even the inscription above the doorway, commemorating the royal patronage, has been moved. Now residing within the newer tower built in 1837. Rødøvre Kirke isn’t merely a building. It’s a living tapestry woven with threads of history, resilience, and faith.
