“Prayer is key” someone once said here at Roding Lane Free Church. But what else is key to understanding this place? Roding Lane Free Church has been a cornerstone of the Redbridge community for nearly a century. Its story is interwoven with faith community and resilience.
In 1933 new houses appeared between Roding Lane and Redbridge Lane. With them came new families seeking a place to worship. Mr H. E. Borton recognized this need. In 1934 he built the first church building at his own expense. Percy Brand donated the land. He was a generous man who also built many local houses.
Mr and Mrs Borton led the church for the first seven years. They were assisted by Mr Kensit. Rev. Howard Kensit became the Minister in 1937.
During World War Two bombs damaged the church. The house next door was destroyed. Despite the destruction the fellowship continued its Christian meetings. In 1952 the war damage was repaired. A third hall appeared and the buildings were refaced with red bricks. Mr Brand gave more land including the house next door for the Pastor.
Around 1955 Raymond Hart became Church Secretary. He held this position for 30 years. He also led Sunday School with up to 100 children. Hart organized many church activities. David Walker then became Secretary. He remained in the position for about 30 years.
Rev. Richard Fry became Honorary Pastor in 1966. He introduced Shirley Chapman to the church. She worked in Brazil as a missionary. In 1970 a new roof was built. A modern front was constructed. This created more space.
In 1978 Rev. Geoff Carr became an elder. He served for 36 years until his death in 2017. Geoff and Isobel Carr ran holiday clubs for young people. Isobel also ran groups for young people and mothers.
In 2009 a group of Brazilian Christians joined Roding Lane Free Church. They were led by Rogerio da Silva and Pastor Marcos. In 2013 Michael Virgilio and his wife Cristina began to lead the Brazilian fellowship.
During the COVID-19 pandemic services continued on Zoom. David Walker organized them. In 2022 and 2023 the church buildings were refurbished. New windows lighting and toilets were installed.
Today Roding Lane Free Church continues to serve the community. A new leadership team was appointed in 2023. The church offers English and Brazilian Portuguese services. It hosts craft clubs and connection groups. Prayer remains central to the church’s mission.
