Let’s talk about history. This rock shelter here, well, it’s a true time capsule. This shelter is located just outside of Antalya, facing the Mediterranean Sea. It’s been a refuge for humans for thousands of years. Imagine the early humans – families trekking across the Anatolian peninsula, carrying their tools and belongings, searching for a safe haven. They found it here! This place was a safe haven, tucked away from the harsh elements and potential dangers of the open plains. This wasn’t just any shelter, though. It was a place where they left their mark on the world, literally. Here on these walls, they painted their lives, their stories, their hopes and their struggles. They used red ochre, a natural pigment found in the earth, to create the images. We can see mountain goats and deer, animals vital for survival. The hunters who lived here over 10,000 years ago used these drawings not only for their hunt but perhaps even for rituals or spiritual beliefs. The paintings are a window into their world, a glimpse into how they lived and what they believed. There are even some drawings of humans! This is a very rare find. So, look around you, this rock shelter has a great deal of history. It whispers of the past, of generations that came before, and it reminds us of the connection we all share with early humans.
