Envision this stone before you. This is the Roccia Delle Griselle. Its surface holds secrets etched over centuries. It is located near Garda. This rock is more than just a stone. It is a canvas where ancient people left their mark.

Back in 1964 Mario Pasotti had an intuition. He recognized the importance of the marks on stones like Roccia Delle Griselle. He realized that these were ancient rock carvings.

The Roccia Delle Griselle is one of the first stones Pasotti discovered. The carvings here tell many stories. They show boats human figures religious symbols and swords.

Look closely at the swords. There are about fifteen of them. Experts like Fabio Gaggia believe these carvings are from the late Iron Age. One carving looks like a dagger. Its size makes some think it is life-sized.

Notice the boat images. Lake Garda was once a primary means of transport. One carving shows the word MROA. This probably refers to the Marola. It was a transport boat docked in Malcesine until the early 1800s.

The glaciers shaped this region. They retreated around 12000 years ago. This left Lake Garda and Monte Baldo. Monte Baldo became a natural slate for carvings. After the ice age people returned. Pottery and flint tools prove their presence in Neolithic times. The Bronze Age saw a population boom. About one hundred villages existed in the Benaco area.

The path to Roccia Delle Griselle itself has history. It was once a road between Garda and Torri del Benaco. Cristoforo Minelli renovated it in 1769. Now it is a trail for hikers and bikers. The area around Roccia Delle Griselle is lush. Oak hornbeam and holm oak thrive here.

Creating these carvings was not easy. It required a pointed tool and constant hammering. There is a simple technique to view them better. First clean the rock. Then wet it with water. The figures then become clearer.

You can even make a copy of the carvings. Place a thin white paper over the carving. Rub it with leaves and soil. A life-size copy will appear.

These carvings are part of a larger collection. The Monte Baldo area has many such sites. They stretch from Garda to San Zeno di Montagna. They lie between the lake at 64 meters and 600 meters. The lake and mountains greatly influenced the culture here.

These carvings are a link to our ancestors. They reveal their anxieties aspirations and culture. The Roccia Delle Griselle gives us a peek into the past. It connects us to those who lived here long ago. Remember this stone. It is a testament to human history. It is a story etched in stone.
