Did David L. Roberts envision children laughing as they slid down the playground equipment, their joyous shrieks echoing through the trees? Right now, we are standing at the edge of Roberts Square Park, a four-acre oasis of green in the heart of Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood. This park, gifted to the community in 1873, is a testament to the lasting legacy of David L. Roberts. Roberts was more than just a landowner, he was a founding father of Jefferson Park. He served as the township’s first Clerk, a highway overseer, and a justice of the peace. His dedication to this community ran deep, and his generosity extended beyond Roberts Square Park. He and his family donated land and resources to establish the first church in Jefferson Park, the Jefferson Park Congregational Church, which remarkably, still stands today. Originally a public square, Roberts Square became city property when Chicago annexed Jefferson Township in 1889. Years later, control of the park was given to the Jefferson Park District. Then, in a twist of fate that mirrored the city’s own growth, the Jefferson Park District, along with 21 others, was absorbed into the newly formed Chicago Park District in 1934. Through all these transitions, Roberts Square Park remained a constant, a peaceful haven within a bustling metropolis.
