Rizal Monument Obelisk

Gazing up at the Rizal Monument, have you ever considered its silent testimony to a nation’s struggle? The Rizal Monument, here in Rizal Park, Manila, isn’t just a towering obelisk. It is the resting place of José Rizal, a national hero, executed on December 30, 1896. This monument, dedicated by the people of the Philippines, stands as a symbol of their enduring respect and admiration. The monument’s bronze sculpture depicts Rizal in an overcoat, a book in hand, symbolizing his literary works, “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.” The obelisk behind him, reaching a height of 12.7 meters, often interpreted as a nod to Rizal’s masonic background, is crowned with three stars representing Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the three major island groups of the Philippines. Around the base, you’ll find symbolic figures: a mother and child representing family, and two boys reading, emphasizing the importance of education. Rizal’s remains lie interred within the stone base, beneath a plaque that reads, “To the memory of José Rizal, patriot and martyr.” The monument’s journey began in 1901 with Act No. 243, which granted land for the memorial. An international design competition followed, with Richard Kissling’s “Motto Stella” (Guiding Star) ultimately chosen. The monument was unveiled on Rizal’s 17th death anniversary in 1913, a poignant reminder of his sacrifice. The monument has seen its share of changes. A steel pylon, added in 1961 for Rizal’s birth centenary, was later removed due to public disapproval.
