Picture this a tranquil island nestled in the heart of the River Thames. This is Rivermead Island a place where history whispers through the reeds. Originally two separate islands Rivermead and Swan’s Rest they are now one. Joined together by the relentless forces of nature. The smaller Swan’s Rest has become part of the larger Rivermead Island. Its fishing rights belonged anciently to the parish south of the river.

Rivermead Island is a haven of peace a flat grassy expanse lightly dotted with trees. Imagine the sunlight dappling through the leaves. Feel the gentle breeze carrying the scent of wildflowers and river water. This former common land is open to the public. It is part of the Metropolitan Green Belt a green lung in the heart of bustling England. From the island you can see Sunbury Lock Island across the Thames. A picturesque scene if ever there was one. An elegant arched footbridge connects Rivermead to the mainland. Simple metal balustrades and handrails guard the path for walkers. In drier times four-wheel drive vehicles can even cross the shallow backwater.

But Rivermead Island is not just a pretty face. It has a more practical role to play. Because it sits at a mere 9 meters above sea level it frequently floods. In fact in February 2014 it was completely submerged. The island became an important flood meadow. It helped absorb copious rainfall protecting nearby homes from more extensive damage. This is a crucial environmental service. Far from being just a pretty feature it is a vital part of the Thames’s flood defense. Rivermead Island plays its part.

Another interesting aspect of Rivermead Island is its annual visitor. The Sunbury Amateur Regatta takes place here every late August. This major Thames Skiff regatta brings in a funfair and local dignitaries. A colourful and lively addition to the island’s usual quiet existence. Many of the local pubs and restaurants do good business then. There’s even a council-run car park nearby. It is conveniently placed for visitors to enjoy the event. It is situated behind a low wall. Close to the upper end of Rivermead on the Sunbury bank.

However not all additions to the island have proved as permanent. In 1935 an outdoor swimming pool was built on Rivermead. It was a welcome amenity for many years. However in 1980 it closed down. Filled in. There’s no trace left today. Now it’s just the river the grass the trees. And the memories.

Rivermead Island is a place of contrasts. It is a tranquil haven and a vital part of the Thames’s ecosystem. A place of natural beauty. It’s a place of community events. It has a significant role to play in protecting the region from floods. It is a part of history. It is also a place of change. It is a place of both stillness and activity. A place where the past and present intertwine. This unassuming island tells a story far richer and more complex than it seems at first glance.
