Washed away, rebuilt, reborn. This is the story of Riverhead Bridge. The Riverhead Bridge we stand before today is not the original. It’s a testament to the community’s resilience. On January 27, 2023, Auckland experienced devastating floods. The Riverhead Bridge, spanning Mill Flat Road, couldn’t withstand the raging waters. It collapsed and was swept downstream. Dramatic footage captured the bridge’s demise. Witnesses watched in disbelief as the raging waters overwhelmed the structure. The debris crashed into trees, taking them down as well. The loss of the Riverhead Bridge cut off 200 residents. They had to rely on a 30-minute detour via a forestry road, only suitable for 4×4 vehicles. But the community didn’t give up. Within just six days, a temporary bailey bridge was installed. This type of bridge, typically used by armed forces, became a lifeline for Riverhead. Ten workers from Downer, along with Waka Kotahi and Auckland Transport, worked tirelessly. They brought in 80 tonnes of equipment, consisting of 2500 pieces of steel and bolts, plus truckloads of wooden planks. This one-lane bailey bridge, while temporary, was even stronger than its predecessor. The Riverhead Bridge, while originally scheduled for replacement in 2024, will be rebuilt again. It will be a permanent structure, designed to withstand future flooding. Riverhead Bridge stands as a symbol of strength. It shows how a community can overcome adversity. It embodies the spirit of Auckland.
