Have you ever walked through a landscape park that whispered stories of Enlightenment thinkers? Welcome to Rittergut Seifersdorf a place where history breathes. This former manor house near Dresden boasts origins stretching back to the 12th century. Its true significance however bloomed under Count Hans Moritz von Brühl and his wife Christina nicknamed Tina. They transformed Rittergut Seifersdorf into a hub of intellectual and cultural exchange.

The von Brühls were deeply connected to the Weimar Classicism circle. Their close friendship with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is well documented. They exchanged numerous letters and met regularly in Weimar and Karlovy Vary. Johann Gottfried Herder joined them sometimes. The family even erected a monument in Goethe’s honor in the manor’s garden. A statue dedicated to Anna Amalia stands nearby in the idyllic Seifersdorf Valley. Tina von Brühl designed this valley itself one of Europe’s earliest and most beautiful landscape parks.

Imagine strolling among exotic trees where great poets and thinkers gathered. Christoph Martin Wieland Gottfried Schadow and the Körner brothers were frequent guests. Later Carl Maria von Weber visited too. Their son Carl von Brühl a Prussian General Director of the Royal Theatre in Berlin took over Rittergut Seifersdorf after his mother’s death in 1816. He collaborated with architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel rebuilding the manor in the Neo-Gothic style.

The current renovation of Rittergut Seifersdorf is extensive. Events are temporarily held in the castle park. There you’ll find 40 display panels from the permanent exhibition detailing the site’s cultural history. A museum is planned for the first floor and a visitor center for the ground floor. The entire restoration is expected to be complete by the end of 2026. The park itself however remains open all year round. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Rittergut Seifersdorf. A place where the past meets the present. A place where stories still unfold. A place where you can almost hear the echoes of conversations between Goethe and the Brühls.
