“Godwin’s village.” That’s what Gönnsdorf once was. Today, we stand before Rittergut Gönnsdorf. It is a testament to time and transformation. This estate whispers tales of noble families and artistic revival.

In 1378, Gönnsdorf appeared in records as “Godinsdorff”. Its name evolved over centuries. It went through forms like “Godinßdorf” to finally become “Gönnsdorf” in 1791. The name means “village of a Godwin”.

Fast forward to 1721. The von Manteuffel family acquired Rittergut Gönnsdorf. Agnes von Manteuffel took charge of the neglected estate. She initiated architectural and landscaping changes. Her vision was a small palace. It would have an adjacent park. The park would reflect the geometric style of French gardens.

Agnes had connections. August the Strong was a close friend of her husband. This made Rittergut Gönnsdorf a frequent destination for the Dresden court. Imagine lavish gatherings. Picture important figures strolling through the gardens.

Later, in 2005, the city of Dresden sold the manor house. The new owners were Peter and Robert Makolies and their partners. These artists renovated it. It became a living space with an attached studio.

Take a moment to appreciate the Baroque fountain. It was renovated in 2020. The fountain dates back to the estate’s transformation after 1721. It is the work of court sculptor Francois Condray. He also created the Delphinbrunnen on Brühlsche Terrasse.

Today, Rittergut Gönnsdorf stands as a blend of history and art. It shows the dedication of those who shaped it. From Agnes von Manteuffel’s vision to the Makolies’ artistic touch. Gönnsdorf continues to evolve. It remains a captivating landmark in Dresden’s Schönfelder Hochland.
