Intrigued by the name, isn’t everyone? Ripple Affect. Right here in Seattle, the name suggests a cascade, a chain reaction. But what exactly is the Ripple Affect? Let’s delve into the fascinating story of one particular Ripple Affect, a testament to the power of inspiration and mentorship. This Ripple Affect isn’t a physical artwork you can touch, but rather a powerful force emanating from the Seattle Aquarium. It’s the story of the Youth Ocean Advocates program, or YOAs.

The Seattle Aquarium’s YOA program has been making waves since 1994. It nurtures young marine enthusiasts, fostering their passion for the ocean and empowering them to become future conservation leaders. Over 2,500 teens have participated, learning and growing at the Aquarium. Then, like ripples expanding outward, they’ve gone on to make a real difference for the marine environment. The Ripple Affect is their collective impact.

Bethany Shimasaki, a YOA from 2012-2015, now works in ecotourism, sharing her knowledge and contributing data to researchers. She credits the Aquarium with helping her see the impact of science education and giving her the confidence to pursue her passion. Trinity Conn, another YOA alumna, was captivated by the Aquarium’s coral reef. The program fueled her interest, leading her to a Ph.D. in coral genomics and conservation. Now she continues her vital work at the Shedd Aquarium. The Ripple Affect continues to expand.

Even some YOAs return to the Aquarium. Derek Baker, a YOA from 1995-1997, is now the senior director of strategic initiatives and government affairs. He brought his experience in public policy and community organizing back to the place that sparked his passion for the marine environment. Hyejoo Ro, also a YOA from 2012-2015, is currently in graduate school, researching predator dietary patterns. She aims to use her skills to understand complex ecological interactions in various ecosystems. Liz Allyn, another former YOA, works as a marine mammal technician, studying seal and sea lion populations. She found her niche at the intersection of policy and research, a path inspired by her time at the Aquarium. Each story is a testament to the Ripple Affect.

The Ripple Affect of the YOA program is a powerful reminder that mentorship and education can have a profound impact. It demonstrates how a single institution can inspire generations of ocean advocates. It’s a story of passion, dedication, and the enduring power of the sea. As these young leaders continue to make waves in their respective fields, the Ripple Affect of the Seattle Aquarium continues to grow, ensuring a healthier future for our oceans and our planet.
