Rio de Janeiro Zoological Garden

Nestled within the vibrant heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Rio de Janeiro Zoological Garden, also known as BioParque do Rio, has a fascinating tale to tell. Originally founded in 1870 by Baron João Batista Viana Drummond in the Vila Isabel neighborhood, the zoo’s first incarnation was a unique venture. To finance it, the Baron held a raffle, with each ticket bearing the image of one of the zoo’s 25 animals. The winner received a cash prize. This lottery sparked the creation of an illegal gambling game known as jogo do bicho, which continues to this day. The Vila Isabel zoo thrived until the 1940s. It eventually found its current home in Quinta da Boa Vista in 1945, transforming into the Rio de Janeiro Zoological Garden we know and love. This 55,000-square-meter park houses over 1,300 animals, representing 350 species. The zoo is not merely a collection of animals; it is a sanctuary for rare and endangered species. In 2019, during renovations, a treasure trove of over 30,000 artifacts was unearthed, offering a glimpse into Brazil’s imperial past. These relics, ranging from fragments of china and cutlery to military buttons bearing the imperial coat of arms, likely belonged to the National Museum and tell a silent story of a bygone era. Today, the Rio de Janeiro Zoological Garden remains a vital center for environmental education and conservation.
