Gazing at Saturn through a telescope is always a thrill. Whether you’re seeing them for the first or the hundredth time. We’re standing before Rings of Saturn in Melbourne. It is more than just an artwork. It is a portal to the cosmos.
Melbourne offers many chances to observe celestial events. Rings of Saturn may spark your interest in astronomy. In early 2025, the rings of Saturn will seem to vanish. Earth passes through the plane of the rings at that time. This phenomenon occurs roughly every 15 years.
Sadly, the planet will be too close to the Sun to observe on March 24. But evenings until mid-February and mornings from late March offer viewing opportunities. You’ll see Saturn with narrow, tilted rings then.
You’ll need a telescope to see Saturn with its rings. If you don’t have one, consider a night tour. The Melbourne Observatory and the Astronomical Society of Victoria are good options. They offer observing sessions.
Tonight’s lunar occultation will be visible from Melbourne. It occurs when the Moon appears to pass in front of Saturn. These celestial events are only visible for a small part of Earth each time they occur. You need to be in the right place at the right time to watch it unfold.
It may also be hard to make out the rings of Saturn tonight. The planet’s current orientation relative to Earth means its rings are almost edge-on to Earth. Think of trying to view a piece of paper from the side.
If you’ve been watching the sky in the evenings lately. You will have seen Saturn rising above the trees in the East at around 7 PM. It’s rising earlier every night and will soon be appearing at about the same time as sunset.
When planets rise at sunset and set at sunrise, they are at opposition. From Earth’s perspective, they are fully illuminated. In other words, the Sun, Earth, and Saturn are about to form a straight line. The opposition itself isn’t a perfectly straight line, of course.
The actual opposition is shortly before midnight on September 8. For a few days before and after that, Saturn’s rings will glow brightly. This is because the material that forms the rings has a retroreflective quality. It reflects much of the light that hits it directly back towards the source, like a road sign.
If you look at Saturn right now, you’ll notice its rings are closing up. This is caused by the Earth passing through the plane of those rings. That’ll happen in March of 2025. Saturn is also approaching an equinox of its own. In May 2025, the sun will pass through the ring plane, so the rings won’t cast a shadow. All this means that during early to mid 2025, we won’t see any trace of the rings.
