In 1977, a seed of faith was planted. Dr. Herbert J. Russell and Dr. Herldleen Russell, the founders of Ridgely Church of God, sought guidance for their ministry. They envisioned serving in prisons or nursing homes. However, God had a different path in mind for them. In 1978, a divine call led them from Illinois to Maryland. This marked the beginning of Ridgely Ministries. The Ridgely Church of God initially found its home in a small church on Central Avenue in Capitol Heights in 1980. This location, formerly Ridgley Methodist, now stands as an African American historical landmark. Within a year, the church flourished, overflowing with attendees. Nine years later, the need for expansion became evident. God instructed the Russells to seek a new space, emphasizing Ridgely’s unique role as a beacon of faith. A remarkable turn of events led them to an elderly woman who owned land in the Westphalia Community. She refused all other offers, reserving the land specifically for Dr. Russell. In 1989, the new Ridgely Church of God edifice was erected on this nearly five-acre plot at 9235 D’Arcy Road in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This move marked a significant expansion for Ridgely Ministries, furthering their reach and impact. Ridgely Church of God’s rich history spans over three decades, rooted in holiness and a commitment to God’s word. The church has served as a training ground for pastors, nurturing the birth of new ministries. Its influence extends both domestically and abroad, transforming lives through faith, breaking addictions, and restoring families. The legacy of compassion, established by the founders, continues to thrive, reaching out to the incarcerated, the immobile, the ill, and those in need. Today, Ridgely Church of God thrives under the leadership of Elder Patrick L. Russell, son of the founders, and his wife, Evangelist Tekesha Russell. The church is affiliated with the Churches of God in Christ (COGIC), a prominent predominantly Black denomination.
