Wondering where the heart of community beats in Rockville, Maryland? It beats right here at Twinbrook Park. This park is not just a green space. It is a vibrant hub for recreation and community engagement.

Twinbrook Park started as a simple green space in 1953. Over the years, it has blossomed into a comprehensive recreation area. It offers something for everyone.

The park now spans 9.2 acres. It features basketball courts, tennis courts and a playground. There are also volleyball courts for those who enjoy a friendly game. Nature trails wind through the park. These trails provide a peaceful escape from city life. Benches dot the landscape. They invite visitors to sit and enjoy the surroundings. Picnic tables offer a perfect spot for outdoor meals.

Twinbrook Park is adjacent to the Twinbrook Community Recreation Center. This proximity enhances the park’s appeal. In 1999, the city constructed a new building for the recreation center. This building includes a community room, a gym, an exercise room and a computer lab.

The Twinbrook Community Recreation Center welcomes a diverse group of children and families every day. The center offers after-school programs and various classes. Drop-in sports provide opportunities for spontaneous fun. Open gym sessions are popular. Families enjoy a range of family-friendly programs in a safe and friendly environment.

Twinbrook itself has a rich history. The name “Twinbrook” comes from the two streams that once ran through the area. These streams eventually feed into Rock Creek. Developers Joseph L. Geeraert, Roland Simmon, Wesley Sauter and Donald Gingery established the Twinbrook subdivision in 1946.

The area has evolved significantly since then. In the early days, a need for recreational amenities was evident. The Twinbrook Swimming Pool was a popular addition. Volunteers from the community dug the pool. The Catholic Archbishop sold the land to the Twinbrook Swimming Pool Corporation for just $10.

The Twinbrook area has seen many changes. The Twinbrook Mart and Twinbrook Shopping Center were early retail hubs. The Twinbrook Library started in the basement of a drugstore. The Twinbrook Metro station opened in 1984. It improved accessibility to the area.

Today, Twinbrook Park stands as a testament to community growth and resilience. It is a place where neighbors connect. Families create memories here. The park is a cornerstone of the Twinbrook community. Whether you are playing a game of tennis, enjoying a picnic or simply taking a stroll, Twinbrook Park offers a welcoming space for all.
