Established in 1841 by John Carre Riddell and Thomas Ferrier Hamilton Riddells Creek boasts a rich history. They purchased 640 acres of land leasing another 2000. The town grew around the railway line which opened between 1859 and 1861. This transported timber from the surrounding area. Riddells Creek became a small town in a farming area. It was influenced by wealthy landowners in Macedon and Clarkefield.

A flax mill once operated here. During World War II the Women’s Land Army processed flax. They lived in Beulah a former Salvation Army girls’ home. Riddells Creek’s population nearly tripled between 1976 and 1996 reaching 1216. The development of Sunbury as a satellite town and the opening of the Tullamarine Freeway contributed to this growth.

Today Riddells Creek thrives. It has a shopping centre a primary school churches a mechanics’ institute a recreation reserve and various sporting clubs. The town is also home to Dromkeen Museum. This 19th-century homestead houses the Australian Children’s Literature Collection. It features educational displays and programs.

Adjacent to Mount Charlie State Forest is the Rowallan Recreation and Adventure Camp. Owned by the Scouts and Guides of Essendon Area it opened in 1950. Named after Lord Rowallan the camp spans 74 hectares. Riddells Creek also has a railway station on the Bendigo line. Sometimes trains run express bypassing Riddells Creek. Nearby is Riddell Airfield a small private airfield. It’s located 4 km east of the town.
