It’s a vital part of Bremerhaven’s maritime heartbeat. The Richtfunkturm Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt was built between 1962 and 1965. It was commissioned by the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt (WSA) Bremerhaven, who needed a reliable way to manage the bustling ship traffic. Now, picture this. You’re a ship captain navigating the tricky waters of the Weser River. Fog rolls in, visibility drops. You’re essentially sailing blind. But high above, the Richtfunkturm Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt stands vigilant. It receives radar images from various radar towers, like the one at Dedesdorf. It relays this crucial information to the traffic control center in the WSA building next door. The Richtfunkturm Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt doesn’t have its own radar. It acts as a communication hub. It gathers data and ensures its swift delivery to those who need it most. It also facilitates radio communications, acting as a lifeline between ships and the shore. So, while it might be mistaken for a radar tower, its function is even more crucial. It’s the messenger, the silent guardian, ensuring the safe passage of vessels through these often-challenging waters. And for those not captaining a ship? The Richtfunkturm Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt used to offer a breathtaking panoramic view from its 59-meter high visitor platform. Although currently closed, imagine the vista. The sprawling city of Bremerhaven at your feet. The Havenwelten with its modern architecture. The Weser River bending towards the North Sea. Truly a remarkable sight.
